Prof. Qunji Xue is one of the major academic leaders in materials science, special lubricating materials and marine materials in China and has been engaged in the research on special lubricating materials and material chemistry for years. In 1987, he founded the Key Laboratory of Solid Lubrication (he was the Laboratory Director from 1987 to 1999 and Chairman of the Laboratory Academic Committee from 1999 up till now), which has been continuously granted the title of Outstanding Laboratory in the state evaluation of laboratories in 1992, 1997, 2003 and 2008. In 1997, he was elected as the academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
Professor Xue’s research work and activities encompassed many parts of the science and technology of tribology. Since 1968, Professor Xue had led and successfully fulfilled over 50 key projects from MOST, NSFC, CAS, National Defence Department, and industry. His successful research work has covered many different areas in the field of tribology including tribo-chemical mechanism, novel anti-wear and self-lubricating materials.
Prof. Qunji Xue has accumulated abundant experience and reached a high level in the design and preparation of new materials, and material tribology as well as tribochemistry. He has been invited to present the invited talk entitled “Tribochemistry of Ceramics Lubrication” during the Gordon Conference held in America in 1994. And he has also been awarded “2011Tribology Gold Medal”.
Prof. Qunji Xue has been appointed as the Director of the Academic Committee of the Ningbo Institute of Materials Technology and Engineering (MINTE) since 2010. He created the Key lab of Marine Materials and Application technologies. And now, beside tribology, Marine Materials and technologies such as Drag reduction and noise reduction technology, surface enhancement of key parts for marine equipment, oil absorption materials, antifouling paints, anticorrosive paints, are also his research interesting.
Prof. Xue holds 55 Chinese patents plus 30 in pending, and has published more than 300 peer-reviewed International papers. These invention patents and papers span from additive for lubricating oil, high performance lubricating oil and grease under extreme working conditions, novel solid lubricating coating/films, nanocrystalline bulk metal materials, self-lubricating ceramic materials, to high-strength self-lubricating composite materials and other novel anti-wear, anti-corrosion and drag reduction materials.
