The major achievement of Dr. Jie includes 389 papers, 27 patents, 1 book and two joint books, 2 national awards for technology innovations by Chinese Government, and 48 graduated Ph D students.
Prof. Jie developed a numerical model for simulating the temperature field, the thermo-solute convection, the solute segregation and the growth interface morphology. Based on this work, crystal growth process was optimized to obtain large size, low defects single crystals of several II-VI compounds, i.e. CdZnTe, HgInTe, etc...He established a point defect model for CdZnTe (CZT), which treats the point defects in the crystal as an ideal cation substituted pseudo binary alloy. The defect concentrations are calculated as functions of Cd partial pressure and the minimum attainable deviation from stoichiometry is derived. He obtained the real shape of the bulk defects in CZT crystals in three dimensions. The migration behavior of Te inclusions was revealed and the annealing process for eliminating Te inclusions in the wafers with thickness up to 5 mm was optimized. He introduce TSC, TEES, LBIC and MWPCD technique to quantify the effects of crystal defects on the carrier transportation and physical properties of CZT detectors. Base on the above work, he Developed the technology for the manufacture of CZT single crystal used for X-ray and gamma ray detectors. The technology has been transferred into industry, and a company named IMDETEK was established, which is now the only company in Asia specialized for the production of detector-grade CZT for X-ray and Gamma-ray detectors.
Prof. Jie specializes on the experimental and theoretical studies of the solidification behaviors of metallic engineering materials. In the field, he established models for micro-scale segregation, and macro-scale segregation, and proposed a method for the coupling evaluation of porosity segregation in solidification structure. Based on the work, developed a new technology on the principles of counter-gravity casting for large aluminum and magnesium casting upto 2 tons. This technology has been transferred into more than 30 companies.
