Yi Luo is a Professor of Semiconductor Optoelectronics at the Department of Electronic Engineering, Tsinghua University. He received his BSc degree in Physical Electronics from Tsinghua University in 1983 and PhD degree in Electronic Engineering from the University of Tokyo in 1990, respectively. Since 1992, he joined the Department of Electronic Engineering, Tsinghua University, where he is currently serving as the head of the integrated optoelectronics research group.
Yi Luo is a Vice Director of Tsinghua National Lab of Information Science and Technology, the Convener of Electronic Science and Technology Discipline Review Group of the sixth Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council (China), an overseas editor of Japanese Journal of Applied Physics and Applied Physics Express. In 2011, he was awarded the National Science and Technology Progress Awards (Class two), and in 2012, he was awarded the National Technological Invention Awards (Class two).
Yi Luo has published more than 225 papers, with a total of over 1500 citations by other researchers. He has presented over 40 keynote speeches or invited talks at international conferences. His current research interests include semiconductor lasers, optical modulators, photonic integrated devices such as integration of DFB lasers/EA modulators for fiber telecommunications, GaN based high brightness and high power LEDs for solid state lighting, fabrication technology of the devices based on compound semiconductor materials, materials growth by MOVPE or MBE, nano photonic device for quantum information technology, packaging technologies for high speed optoelectronic devices such as 40 Gb/s DFB laser/EA modulator integrated light source, nonimaging optics for white LED based semiconductor lighting, solar cells and applications, solar thermal application technologies.
