Jianmin Chen is the director and Chair Professor in Key Laboratory of New Marine Materials and Application Technology, Ningbo Institute of Materials Technology and Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences. He obtained his BS degree in Physics from Northwest Normal University in 1982 and MS degree in Physical Chemistry from Lanzhou Institute of Chemical Physics in 1985. He worked as a visiting scientist at Central Research Institute of Japan in 1991 and at Argonne of USA in 2002.
Jianmin Chen is mainly engaged in the preparation and application of high-performance special lubricating materials and surface engineering technology, skilled in solving friction, wear, sealing and surface protection problems in extremely harsh conditions. Jianmin Chen has obtained remarkable achievements in the fields of high-tech materials and application. At present, He is the director of Advanced Lubrication and Protection Materials Research and Development Center, the director of Key Laboratory of New Marine Materials and Application Technology, the chairman of Surface Engineering Institute of Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society. He is not only the editorial board member of Tribology, China Surface Engineering and other periodicals, but also the contributing reviewer of Surface Technology, Materials Protection, Applied Surface Science, Journal of Physics D-Applied Physics, Journal of Materials Science, and Surface and Coating Technology.
He has developed more than 30 varieties of novel lubricating and sealing materials including special coatings, self-lubricating materials, high performance sealants, and surface engineering products. His professional achievements have helped to solve a series of lubricating and sealing problems in high-tech areas of China and acquired significant social and economic benefits.
He has won 8 national and provincial level awards, including a second prize of State Technological Invention 2004 (first place ranking), a third prize of National Science and Technology Progress 1998 (first inventor of materials, second place ranking), a first prize of Science and Technology Progress of Chinese Academy of Sciences (second place ranking), a first prize of Gansu Province Scientific and Technological Progress (second place ranking) and so on. Furthermore, he has acquired first prize of Chinese Academy of Sciences for Young Scientists 1999 and an award of Gansu Province Youth Science and Technology 1998. He was awarded advanced workers of Gansu Province in 1999 (labor model). In 1995, he was approved a special government allowance by State Council of China. He received the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars in 1999. Besides, he was conferred the honor of Advanced Individual Supporting National Defense Industry in 2006. As the adviser of over 30 Ph.D. candidates, so far he has published more than 250 academic papers, including 146 papers cited by SCI for a total of over 800 times. In the meantime, he has declared more than 60 national invention patents (20 of them have been authorized) and co-published 5 books.
